Character comparison from Romeo and Juliet:

Mercutio (book vs movie adaptation from 1996)

Romeo and Juliet is one of the most remembered stories due to the development of the main characters and because of the course that the story takes while this last one is developing. But a great story can´t be so good without good characters and Mercutio is a character that it is essential in the story, and due to this and the fact that the Mercutio is the character that has an extremely weird appearance in the 1996 film adaptation, I consider him my favorite character and one worth of a comparison between the same character in the book and the film.

Mercutio has a reason to be there in the plot and it is in both versions of the story. He is the one that takes Romeo to the Capulet party, he also is the one that has not problems to be with both families (being Romeo´s friend and a relative from Paris) so he is more like and important link between the families although we didn’t notice, and he is the main reason that makes Romeo to kill Tyball and take the story to a climax.

Both versions of the story have some great differences, but those facts dont break the key functions of the character. Thought Mercutio is an Afro-American person in the film that doesn’t change the fact that he is accepted the same way in the novel. Also because of the fact that he is homosexual in the film, this is more like a strength to the character similar to his counterpart from the novel, because he can comprehend more the feelings of love. And also the way he is represented in the film more like a jokester and more liberal than I thought that it was in the novel, it still has his essence intact.

Mercutio is present at some key points of the story and although his drag queen attitude its now present, he serves his purpose really good: he just hates how Romeo it is all depressed, so due to this fact, he tries to motivate him by inviting him to the Capulet party. He is the one that approves Romeo’s happiness thought he didn’t know that Romeo just was in love with a Capulet and at his dead, he gives us a prediction that both families are going to suffer, when he casts a plague.

As a conclusion I could say that the film and the novel version are so similar and thought the character has some differences in the film adaptation, it still doesn’t lose his essence and purpose, because it could be said that he is a bridge that links the development of the story by giving Romeo at some points of the story a motivation or an advice.

Freytag pyramid

Inciting moment:

At the beginning of the movie, we see Dante, the main character, who is waken up by a phone call from his boss, who tells him to go to work that day, although its Dante’s free day. That is the presentation of Dante and how we are informed that he is a clerk, and the fact that he is not going to be happy about being forced to work for someone's else .

Exposition:

We see that Dante arrives to the store and makes an advertisement that the store is open with a bad mood, also we see in the conversations that he has with the costumers that he isn’t enjoying his work that day because he could be resting and getting ready for a hockey game. Randal, Dante’s best friend is working near the store at the video rental shop, but Randal hates to work there and to attend dumb costumers, but constantly is visiting Dante. Also we see Veronica, Dante’s actual girlfriend, who has a fight with Dante because she didn’t tell him how many times she had oral sex with other men (36 guys excluding Dante). And we see Jay and silence Bob, two guys that are marijuana dealers that are always at the outside of the store.

Rising action:

The story starts to speed up Dante finds that his ex-girlfriend is going to get married, so he gets depressed and he discuss with Randal about the return of the jedi and how unfair was the  ending of the people that was working at the dead star, because they died being innocent, so Dante feels identified with those characters.

Complication:

Dante starts to think about attending to his hockey game, so he closes momentarily the store and plays with his friends at the roof of the building, but an angry customer send to fly the ball that Dante was using to play, so that makes Dante to return to attend the store, but he finds that one of his ex-girlfriends died, so he decides to close the store again and go with Randal to the wake, but they escape from there because apparently Randal messed up the wake.


-Main point: We start to see that Dante`s wrong decitions just made his situattion to get worse.

Climax:

It starts when Caitlin arrives to the store (Dante’s ex-girlfriend that was going to get married), because she doesn’t want to get married, so that’s the point were Dante tries to convince her to start a new relation with her, forgetting that Veronica is her actual girlfriend, so Dante asks Caitlin to wait him at the store, but Caitlin goes to the bathroom.


-Main point: The fact that Caitlin appears, seems to be a perfect cliffhanger to see which woman is selected by Dante, although at this moment, he just don`t seem to remember Veronica.

Reversal:

Dante arrives at the store, but at that moment Caitlin tells him that he was really fast and that he arrived before her. Dante don’t understand that and they find that Caitlin accidentally had sex with another person, so Dante goes to the bathroom to check who was it, but he finds that the person was a customer that asked him some hours before to go to the bathroom and took some pornographic magazines so he couldn’t get bored, but the man had a heart attack and died with an erection, so Caitlin finished with a big trauma due to that mistake.


-Main point: everything appeared to be going well, but in this scene, all this stuff is just screwed up by a little mistake.

Falling action:

After Caitlin’s trauma, Jay and silent Bob speaks with Dante, and due to this, he finds that he is in love with veronica, but after that instant, veronica arrives and Dante is dumped by her, because she finds by Randal that he wanted to revive the relationship that he had with Caitlin.


-Main point: Dante discovers that he loves Veronica due to the way she expressed her feelings with just a single action(she gave him that day lassagna).

Catastrophe:

Dante’s anger makes him fight with Randal some minutes due to the lovely conflict., but after the fight we see that both friends are just talking normally.

Moment of last suspense:

The movie just ends with Randal getting mad with Dante about how he just acted and telling him that is not correct blaming him, because almost all of Dante's mistakes were the ones that made grow all the problems; and with this ending, we could say that the characters just finished their long Day, and for Dante, everything has been a normal day.

Main point:  In this last part we see that Dante accepts that almost every unsuccesfull action that happened that day was associated in some way with his own decitions and mistakes.

Why my favorite movie rocks!!!

 

At nowadays, there have been a lot of influences for writing the script of a movie, and some influences are directly related with the pop culture. But recently, the pop culture has been infected with the popularity of videogames, and this entertainment method has arrived to the movie industry with some incredible adaptations, and one of these adaptations is Final Fantasy:  advent children, which is my favorite movie.

Advent children has a story that is one of its strengths. From the beginning, it has its almost full developed characters (this is logic, due to almost all the people who watch this movie knows well the characters because they played the original game) that interact with each other and develop the relationships to a point that makes you feel sympathy for some characters, also the story is well developed and the action sequences are well managed, making the movie really exciting, and at the end of the movie, the main Character known as Cloud, gets an answer to all the problems presented during the movie, but also he finds an redemption.

This movie is one of the greatest 3d animation movies ever when we talk about animation, this is mainly because the movie was developed for almost 3 years, the modeling and animation job was really well managed and each aspect of the environment, of the characters, of the clothes and of the animation is fully developed, and although it was released in 2005, the movie got a upgraded version on 2010, updating the movie and making it more accessible to the newcomers.

Almost every great movie has a well-managed soundtrack that it’s well synchronized with the sequences and remarks the most epic moments of the movie. Advent children it’s not an exception and gives more deep to each situation, independently if it’s a romantic moment or a battle. The music references to the final fantasy franchise are here, so we can find musical themes and sounds from the game, and the most important point is that Nobuo Uematsu, the composer of the videogame series, made the OST of the movie.

So basically advent children has almost everything to make a Final Fantasy fan happy, but also has the elements to be a good movie: it has a well-managed story that makes the viewer feel many emotions. It has an extreme collection of  well-detailed visuals that makes you think that you are watching the reality and it has one of the most emblematic music scores that can manage emotions without dialogs, so advent children is my favorite movie because it manage so well all this aspects, and combines them making an exciting experience.

One History of me

It was starting October of 2007 and a boy couldn’t spend too much money due to a noble and nostalgic reason: save money to get some Christmas presents, not big deal!.

Yes, I was young and in some way energetic and pure hearted, but that alone couldn’t solve my economic problems, so I had to decide if it was a good idea to get working and begin to save money. The main problem that I had was the question: “What I could do?” well, at nowadays I could say that everyone can do whatever they like as long that everyone enjoys it and dominates that action, but at that time, I didn’t know what to do and I didn’t have something like a special ability that I could use in order to work, the only available reason was to work in a fast food restaurant, but the pay didn’t seemed so well (10 pesos per hour) and I didn’t have enough time with all the work that I had to do for school, so the thing that I figured was that I needed to work in school, but the question transformed into how.

Fortunately I got an idea, I believe that was one of the most important choices that I had (not as important as studying “animation and digital arts”), and I also say that it sounded silly but was the only way to work in school, so I started to sell cookies in school.

I know that you who are reading this could be asking if it was a success or if it wasn’t, I am a believer of hard work and in the beginning it wasn’t really hard, but as long as I was advancing to a new I noticed that it was harder and harder to sell the cookies due to the people attitude or the  price of the box of cookies (the box augmented the price each semester) but the good thing was that at least in December of 2007 I could get the presents that I wanted for the people that deserved them, but sadly in my fourth semester of high school (August-November of 2008) I decided to stop selling if the sells continue to drop, but something interesting happened, until that date I was known as “the guy who sells cookies” but I didn’t had a nickname, but a  teacher that was a client of mine gave me one, so I got the nickname of Cookie-Man and for my surprise I really got known by some people in the  school, and the people bought my cookies due to I got a little bit famous, although they didn’t know my product at the beginning.

So every time that I see that teacher I say thanks for everything that he thought me and for the nickname, he is like a godfather, but the most important things that I learned was the hard work that someone has to do in order to achieve something, how someone has to treat people and to be patient, and still right now I sell cookies, but the money is not the main reason, this work just became a hobby, a hobby that could let me know a girl that is worth for fighting for her love, but that story hasn’t ended yet.
